Frequently Asked Questions
Find answers to common questions about my pet portrait services.
How long does it take to complete a pet portrait?
The timeline depends on the complexity and size of the portrait. Typically, I work with at least a couple of months lead time but the months before Christmas can be booked by the middle of the year. Rush orders may be available for an additional fee. I'll provide you with an estimated completion date when you place your order.
What information do you need from me to start?
I'll need clear, high-quality photos of your pet. The best photos show good lighting, clear detail, and capture your pet's personality. You should also provide any specific requests regarding pose, background, and size preferences. The more detail you provide, the better I can capture what you're looking for.
Can you create a portrait from a single photo?
Yes, I can work from a single high-quality photo. However, I recommend providing 2-3 photos from different angles if possible. Multiple photos help me capture your pet's unique characteristics and ensure the best possible likeness.
Do you offer group pet portraits?
Absolutely! I love creating portraits of multiple pets. Group portraits are priced based on the number of pets and complexity. Please provide clear photos of each pet and let me know your vision for how you'd like them arranged. I always create a mockup so you can see how your pets will look together and ensure we achieve the correct sizing and placement.
What's the difference between a coloured pencil and pastel portrait?
Coloured Pencil Portraits: These are created with layered coloured pencil, offering precise detail, vibrant colours, and excellent control. Coloured pencil work has a smooth, polished finish with fine lines and is ideal for capturing intricate details like fur texture and eye highlights. They're often more time-intensive due to the layering process.
Pastel Portraits: Made with soft pastels, these have a more painterly, expressive quality with softer blending and richer colour transitions. Pastels create a more atmospheric, artistic feel with beautiful depth and luminosity. The medium blends easily for smooth gradients and loose brushwork effects, giving a more traditional painting appearance.
Which should you choose? If you prefer fine detail and a polished look, coloured pencil is ideal. If you want a more artistic, painting-like quality with rich colour blending, pastels are perfect. I'm happy to discuss which medium would best capture your pet's personality!
What sizes and formats are available?
I offer a variety of sizes to suit your needs, from small (8x6") to larger pieces (16x24" and larger). I will match the shape to the portrait reference e.g. rectangular or square as needed.
Can you create a portrait of a pet that has passed away?
Yes, I'd be honoured to create a memorial portrait of your beloved pet. These make wonderful keepsakes to celebrate their memory. Simply provide your best photos, and share any special memories or characteristics you'd like me to capture. I understand that images may be limited where a pet is no longer with us and will do my best to work with the available images wherever possible.
What are your revision policies?
I include a reasonable number of revisions in my portrait packages to ensure you're completely satisfied. If you'd like adjustments to colours, proportions, or other details, please let me know within 7 days of receiving the first draft. Major revisions beyond the scope of the original order may incur additional fees.
